2022 IEEE LEO SatS Workshop: Advanced Solutions for Beyond 5G Satellite Systems - The INGR Satellites Working Group - Giovanni Giambene

In this presentation, Giovanni Giambene provides an overview of the Satellite chapter from the INGR (International Network Generations Roadmap), a 10-year technical roadmap project of IEEE Future Networks. Future 5G/6G mobile communication systems are expected to integrate various radio access technologies, including the satellite component. In this framework, terrestrial services can be augmented with the development of novel satellite systems (namely, UHTS GEO and mega-LEO constellations) to meet service needs in those areas that terrestrial 5G systems cannot cover. The INGR Satellite working group provides a survey of the current most advanced satellite systems and architectures with particular attention to mega-LEO systems, possible use of mmWaves, Mobile Edge Computing, artificial intelligence, QoS/QoE requirements, and standardization aspects referring to the recent work by ITU, 3GPP, and ETSI. All of these areas offer both challenges and possible solutions towards future satellite systems.
