The storage device industry has been going through dynamic changes over the last 3+ years. For more than 50 years, hard disk drives (HDDs) have been an integral component of computing hardware. HDD technologies will continue to evolve and play an important, though different, role in the future of storage. Solid state drives (SSDs), using NAND Flash, have become a core technology for enterprise servers and storage.

The random data performance capabilities of SSDs far exceed what is available from standard hard disk drive offerings. This is becoming an even greater performance gap with the emergence of NVMe (Non-volatile Memory Express) PCIe SSDs as an attractive alternative to traditional SSDs with SATA and SAS interfaces. This presentation will include HDD/SSD technology, an industry perspective of Enterprise HDD/SSD products, key trends occurring on storage device products, and a summary of recent industry acquisitions / alliances. HDDs and SSDs both have a number of Enterprise offerings available in the marketplace. A high-level comparison between products will be discussed with a focus on key differentiators of performance, endurance, capacity, and $$/GB. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of what to expect in the future from the storage device industry.
