As leaders, mentoring the next generation is an increasingly important component of our responsibilities, and often one of the best parts of our day. As easy as it may seem to provide guidance, direction, and support to our star performers, or those individuals who we see as the next leaders of our organizations - it’s the rest of the mentoring relationships that we can all afford to improve upon. This talk will address some of the more challenging mentoring use cases and provide frameworks to use to address the issues (both internal and external). I’ll reference common techniques that are recommended if you are the manager of these individuals, and speak to the different implications in a mentoring relationship. These use cases include: the underperformer who thinks they’re doing great; the individual who is their own worst enemy; the individual who always blames someone else; and, the individual who doesn’t believe rules apply to them; among others. The goal of this talk isn’t to rehash general mentoring challenges; but instead, to work through specific use cases focused on difficult types of mentees, so that we are better prepared to provide guidance and growth opportunities more equally for the next generation.
