With the current environmental concerns; paradigms as sustainable grids and cities have arisen; and one of the key objectives for future years is to achieve 100% penetration of renewable energy in the grid. However; this will create challenges for a grid that was not originally designed for bidirectional power flow such as decentralized voltage and frequency stabilization. The combined power of distributed resources can not only mitigate typical power grid faults but also increase the overall power quality. The high number of distributed resources increases the control complexity and therefore models are required to create a digital twin of all the grid elements. We futurecast that under larger concepts such as Industry 4.0; digital twins of all the grid elements will allow the distributed control and management of a grid with 100 % renewable energy penetration.
