At the 2009 IEEE Honors Ceremony, the winners from the IEEE Presidents' Change the World Competition were awarded for their research and developments. This competition recognizes students who discover a real-world problem and apply engineering, science, computing and leadership skills to solve it.

Grand prize winners Drew Hall and Richard Gaster, Stanford University, developed technology to bring affordable, easy to use, medical diagnostic devices to developing nations. They were named "IEEE Students Humanitarian Supreme."
