IEEE's Power Electronics Society has been hosting Webinars nearly once a month as part of an ongoing series. These educational Webinars go into great depth about current issues in the developing projects of electrical engineers, such as methods of providing sustainable energy and the mathematical algorithms and calculations involved in making such energy sources work properly. Fariborz Musavi and Deepak Gautam explain the fundamentals of battery charging in this webinar. It mainly covers fundamentals of designing a two stage (Power Factor Corrector (PFC) front end followed by DC-DC converter) battery charger. The first part of the presentation will cover topics on topology selection (Single stage vs. two stage design) followed by an overview of the popular PFC topologies and their performance evaluation for various power levels. The second half of the seminar will emphasize on the topology selection and design considerations and performance evaluation of DC-DC converters topologies to be used as a second stage. Fariborz Musavi is an adjunct professor at The University of British Columbia. He works at Delta-Q Technologies. Deepak Gautam is a PhD student at the same university and works at Delta-Q Technologies as well.
Fariborz Musavi and Deepak S. Gautam give a presentation exploring basic aspects of battery charging systems and the optimal designs for different systems.
